MANUEL
ANTONIO is one the most beautiful parks
in the entire system. It is especially
attractive because of the white sandy
beaches at Espadilla Sur and Manuel Antonio
which slope gently into unperturbed,
crystal-clear water.
The beaches are furthermore fringed by a tall evergreen forest,
which grows right down to the high tide mark and provides pleasant
shade. The main habitats in the park are primary and secondary
forest, mangrove swamp, marsh and littoral woodland.
Nonetheless, Manuel Antonio is a wonder to see.
|
Squirrel
monkeys still fly through the trees while
sloths lounge in the beaches and its
tranquil beaches offer ample opportunities
for snorkelling or restful sunbathing.

MONTEVERDE
Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is a
very important and popular ecotourism
destination in Costa Rica.
Strung between two livingly preserved cloud forests that their
inhabitants have guarded for decades, this slender corridor of
civilization connecting the Tico village of Santa Elena and Quaker
settlement of Monteverde is one of Costa Rica’s most popular
destinations.
There are at least 400 bird species in this high elevation rain
forest, including the Resplendent Quetzal, ancient holy bird
of the Mayans, over 100 species of mammals, 120 |
species
of amphibians and reptiles and an estimated
2,500 species of plants making Monteverde
a true "nature lover's paradise".
The preserve has a definite wet and dry
season, though the upper levels have
fog and rain much of the year.

ARENAL
was just another dormant volcano surrounded
by fertile farmland from about AD 1500
until July 29, 1968, when something snapped.
Huge explosions triggered lava flows that
destroyed two villages.
The park was created in 1995. Along with Tenorio, Miravalles and
the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Among other regions, it is
part of the Area de Conservación Arenal, which protects
most of the Cordillera de Tilarán. This area is rugged and
varied, and the biodiversity is high; roughly half the species
of land-dwelling vertebrates (birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians)
known in Costa Rica can be found here. |
The
best night-time views of the volcano are
usually from its northern side, although
activity can sometimes be seen from any
direction. Still, most visitors drive or
take a tour around to the north side in
hope of catching these most impressive
views.
Be aware that clouds can cover the volcano at any time and tours
don’t guarantee a view (though sometimes you can hear explosions).

JACO
is a flat, nondescript resort town and
the closest developed beach resort to
San José. It mainly attracts surfers,
seeking consistent year-round breaks.
For everyone else, the area is the party destination on the Central
Pacific coast.
Playa Jacó is about 2Km off the Costanera, 3.5 km past
the turnoff for Herradura. The beach itself is about 3km long,
hotels and restaurants line the road running behind it. The areas
on the northern and southern fringes are the most tranquil and
attractive and are the cleanest. |

Rosa National Park |

 |
SANTA
ROSA National Park. Among the oldest
and largest national parks in Costa Rica’s
sprawling 38,674 hectares of the Península
Santa Elena is home to a variety of attractions
that are unique in the nation. The shady
campsite near the ranger station is one
of the finest in the national-park system,
with beachside camping also a worthwhile
option.
The park is named after the Hacienda Santa Rosa, where a historic
battle was fought on March 20, 1856, between a hastily assembled
amateur army of Costa Ricans and the invading forces of the North
American filibuster William Walker. In fact, it |
was
mainly historical and patriotic reasons
that brought about the establishment
of this national park in the first place.
It is almost a coincidence that the park
has also become extremely important to
biologists. |
